Tips for using minoxidil and finasteride to treat hair loss

Minoxidil and finasteride are two great options for men and women who want to do something to combat their hair loss. These are two of the most common hair loss medications and have been shown to be effective in preventing baldness and even regrowth.

The main difference between minoxidil and finasteride lies in the application process. Minoxidil is sold as a liquid solution that should be applied directly to the scalp in the area of hair loss. Finasteride is an oral tablet.

Tips for using Minoxidil – Men:

Minoxidil was the first medication approved by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss. Minoxidil is a topical solution applied directly to the scalp. Now it can be purchased without prescription and in generic formulations in concentrations of 5% (for men) and 2% (for women). The exact mechanism by which minoxidil works is not known, but it is believed that the drug increases the growth cycle of the hair follicle (called anagen), thus improving the length and thickness of miniaturized follicles. The Minoxidil solution comes in a generic formula and can be purchased without a prescription. The foam is available only in the brand.

Minoxidil only works where you apply it. Apply in all thinner areas.

:: Minoxidil can work where there is miniaturized hair (where the area is not totally bald)
:: Minoxidil will act on the front of the scalp and on the temples if these areas are just beginning to thin. Therefore, it is important to apply it on the front of the scalp and the hairline if you thin these areas.

Minoxidil should be applied to the scalp to work, it does not work on the hair itself.

:: The 5% solution of Minoxidil is the most effective if you have hair because it will be easier to apply on the scalp.
:: If the 5% solution is irritating to the scalp, try 5% foam that does not contain propylene glycol, the most common irritant.
:: If the 5% solution is too greasy and you discover that you are not using it, go to the foam.

Although minoxidil works best when used twice a day, its use once a day will also be effective (and better than not using it at all).

:: Many patients believe that applying the medication once a day at bedtime is the most practical way to use it.
:: When using minoxidil once a day, use at least twice the recommended dose, so that it is applied to the entire surface of the thinning.

Minoxidil can be applied to the damp scalp when you get out of the shower, which makes grooming easier.

For minoxidil to be effective, it must be used continuously and regularly. Do not stop and start it. You may experience excretion during the first 3 to 6 months of treatment. As a general rule, this indicates that the medication is working. Therefore, do not stop the medication unless you experience side effects. If you interrupt the treatment, you will lose all its benefits (although it will not be worse than if you had never used it).

Minoxidil works best when used with finasteride. Finasteride is the most effective of the two drugs.

Tips for women who use Minoxidil – Women:

The Minoxidil solution is available under a brand and generic formula and can be purchased without a prescription. The foam is still available only in the brand.

Minoxidil is usually prescribed as a 2% solution for women to use twice a day. If it is not convenient for you twice a day, use the male formulation at 5% once a day.

Minoxidil can cause an increase in facial hair. Although 5% is more likely than 2% to cause this, when 5% is used one per day, the side effects appear to be the same.
